Marina Del Rey

Marina del Rey, el puerto deportivo de Los Ángeles

The architect Víctor Gruen was hired to create the master plan for Marina del Rey, an area of 780 acres that includes one of the world’s largest small craft harbors, with a capacity for 5,300 boats.

The project developers had been eyeing the Ballona Wetlands area as a prime location for a harbor since the late 19th century, but it wasn’t until 1953 that plans began to materialize. That year, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors authorized a loan to fund the construction of a marina, and an unusual public-private partnership commenced the development of Marina del Rey, “The King’s Harbor.”

After years of work, somewhat delayed by a harsh winter storm in 1962-1963, Marina del Rey was officially opened in 1965. The marina-focused community includes restaurants, shops, hotels, and multi-family residential housing in both low and high-rise buildings. It is a true treasure of 1960s architecture, ranging from the Polynesian-style ‘Pieces of Eight’ restaurant (now Shanghai Red’s) to pristine mid-century modern apartment buildings. The area exemplifies the mid-century resort lifestyle ideals and is fascinating from both a cultural and planning perspective.

In Marina Del Rey, you’ll also find Marina Beach. The area is located southeast of Venice Beach, and is bordered on all sides by the City of Los Angeles.

Constant redevelopment seems to be a theme in Marina del Rey, putting many of its original buildings at risk of being replaced by new constructions. So, if you haven’t seen them yet, now is a good time.
