This 118-year-old funicular in Downtown Los Angeles takes passengers on a short journey between Hill Street and Grand Avenue in Bunker Hill. Originally opened in 1901, Angels Flight, the world’s shortest railway, has provided more than 100 million rides on the inclined surface of this hill.
For the modest price of 1 dollar (one-way trip), you can take the funicular, either from the upper station at Plaza California (350 South Grand Avenue) or from the lower station on Hill Street, right in front of Grand Central Market. The journey is quite short but steep, and you can also take the adjacent stairs. The tram takes you from the modern part of downtown to the historic Downtown.
Angels Flight is open every day from 6:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., including weekends and holidays.
Angels Flight has appeared in numerous film and television productions, such as the movie La La Land (2016), where we see Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone on the funicular. Interestingly, the film was shot during a period when Angels Flight was closed, opening only for one day expressly for the scene. It also appears in the novel by Michael Conelly ‘Angels Flight‘.
This traditional transportation was designated as Cultural Historic Monument number 4 of Los Angeles in August 1962 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in October 2000.
